Vera Raposo from Small Business Branding interviews Tyrone Shum

I was very privileged to have Vera Raposo from Small Business Branding interview me about outsourcing and to share my experiences with her and the systems I use. She featured our video interview on her blog as well and you can also watch it below as well.

Inside the interview Vera asks me a lot of questions, and there were a lot of mindset questions on how to achieve the “business lifestyle”. So if you’re at that stage now, then this interview is for you.

  1. I recently learned how important outsourcing actually is. Especially if you are into IM and do all the work yourself. It makes you so much productive, you get quicker results and you don’t get tired at the end of the day which helps you concentrate on brainstorming.

  2. Hi Tyrone,

I’m such a Luddite when it comes to outsourcing! I see how much it can help, but I have yet to try it at all. In fact, everything I work on or work at is done by me. If I weren’t there for whatever reason, the work wouldn’t be done. My part-time job is hourly, so I have to be there to get paid too.

Your video is giving me a lot to chew on. I’m 49. What if I get sick and can’t work, even on my online business an hour or so a day? I have no backup plan at present (no sick leave, no disability insurance, not even medical insurance).

While I’m driving around 20 hours a week delivering pizzas, I need to focus my thinking on how I’m going to change that. I need a backup source for a tutor to work for me if I can’t work, and I need to outsource at least some of my web work so I don’t have to be there regularly. The hourly pizza job is short-term to pay off some bills quickly and build up savings while I build my tutoring business to the point I don’t have to work during the summer.

I have a bad habit of living as though I still have a salaried job with benefits. I can’t keep thinking like this and behaving like this now that I’m on my own.

Thanks for the kick in the pants!

    Sherri

Thanks for another great video, Tyrone… I’m working to setup my own business so I can bring my wife and myself home… seeing people who have done the same reminds me that it is an attainable goal.

  8. Great work Tyrone, it’s always motivating to listen to you and how you have things organized. One day I’ll be there….

  9. I am learning to out source some of my stuff and it is really freeing me up to do some of the other things that I need to do. One of my hardest things is trying to get organized.

Great interview and thanks for all the information.

  10. Everytime I get the opportunity to stop by I always plan on getting started outsourcing and then I never am able to come up with the time to get it set up. Maybe time to put the cart after the horse :)

    Thanks again Tyrone

  12. Oh, in terms of video instructions? They are the best. I actually send both – written and video!

    Krizia

    • Hey Krizia,

Great to hear they are helping you a lot.

  13. Tyrone,

That’s a great interview! I quite enjoyed it.

Funny enough, I had a conference call today with two of my virtual assistants today and may I say that your lessons have been incredibly valuable.

    Thanks,

    Krizia

  14. I’ve just started outsourcing. I love it!

  15. I’ve been outsourcing for years, but I found oDesk based on your recommendation and I’ve switched almost exclusively to them. I’ve had mixed success – but when I find someone good I love them!

    Thank you.

  16. Hi Tyrone,
I’ve experimented with outsourcing since I took your recommendation. I’m still sorting out which activities to outsource or delegate. The ones that require some decision -making or a look over by me seem to be the hardest for me to let go of. I like your idea expressed in your video interview above about sending instructions via video. I think that will help me to explain what I’m looking for rather than try to write it all down. Verbal is faster :D

  17. Pushing me closer to hiring a VA. Great information and very happy for her.

Very inspirational. Outsourcing is the way to go. I find that some people are just completely against outsourcing. Well, for them let’s call it delegating, but it is hard to imagine that somebody who runs a business is an expert in all areas.

  19. Sometimes, small business is much more preferable to big enterprise!

  20. Informative and interesting interview. You have me convinced. I am going to prepare to outsource some of my business activity.

  21. Small internet business

To make money from home, small business marketing ideas and niche internet marketing work in conjunction as we continue to live in.
