It has it’s shortcomings but the new version 3.8 will reduce a few of those.

There are 3rd party vendors that make plugins to do invoices and offline payments and other such things. So it’s a real solution.

i have installed it and watched the 2 great videos that were linked earlier on. also checking the sites that are using wp e-commerce has made me think this is a great plugin, which i am sure has come on leaps and bounds in the year or so since this review was written.

tomorrow i am gonna really get in to my own shop and see what i can sort out. i am very excited to see where it takes me!

Anyway first of all the WP e-Commerce Plugin has a new website / home. It is all based around providing better support. The forums are tidier and there are lots of video tutorials. And there is heaps more documentation.

I agree with you… this WP plug in is not for big online stores.
But it works very well for small ones that i attach to some blogs i run and make sales with drop shippers.

I think I’m the guy Dan already referred to (although not from Germany but The Netherlands). We implemented a couple of shops with wp e-commerce and we’re really pleased with the plugin. There are always thing to be improved but hey, this plugin is alive and kicking. It’s fairly easy to implement your own local payment gateway and with the new theming options you can really make your shop stand out of the crowd. And indeed one of our shops has over 10.000 products in its catalog generating ±70% Google traffic through the shop.

We have one guy in Germany that uses WP e-Commerce with over 10,000 products. He sells musical instruments and scores.

To a point the answer goes much deeper then just the number of products you sell. Do you like the product management interface for instance? Do you want to run a WordPress site + a Magento site? Do you like the themes available? Do these software solutions offer the shipping settings for my own personal needs as a seller? And the list could go on.

I’ve heard people say that Magento is hard to setup, its good for e-commerce but it is not as good at being a normal website (in terms of page management and SEO) when compared to WordPress.

Whereas WordPress is a good website with a good e-commerce system on top. So in that sense there are pros and cons.

Thanks for your comment. For something simple like selling 3-4 products, I do recommend using WP-ecommerce. The reason behind this is because it’s easy and simple to setup. Magento is a full package and for serious ecommerce sites. I would only recommend Magento if you are looking to have hundreds of products.

Also, I don’t know if Dan is still following this or not, but when i get to the Instinct WP E-commerce page…I don’t know where to click or what to do next. I am so used to seeing a gallery of examples. I can’t find this.

I am a newbie and do not know much about this stuff. I want a ecommerce site where I can sell 3-4 products, blog about it, and have some cool widgets, videos etc. I want it to be super simple and streamlined.

From my understanding it doesn’t work with 1shoppingcart. The WP Commerce plugin is good to link to Paypal and a few other payment processors.

Great that you are trying this plugin. I highly recommend it for WordPress any day. I have used it myself for other websites and it’s the most easiest to get a simple shopping cart setup.

Processing payments couldn’t be any easier and having the Gold Cart gives you more flexibility to do more things.

Also I agree, Shane has been really helpful and his a great support guy!

i have been working on wp ecommerce for 2 weeks only… so far so good… i have my troubles, im still able to fixed some of those, its pretty annoying actually.. and shayne help me on one… im still thinking to purchase a gold cart – i just really have to be sure i won’t waste my time and money… so for now, im sticking on this plugin…. and sure ill tell you people if i made it running or i gave up working on this…

and i’m there’s a worldpay gateway for checkout..

- better tax support, similiar to what PayPal has done in allowing sellers to specify different tax amounts for different countries (e.g. Australia, U.S., Europe).
- more options for advanced search (show/hide thumbnail, etc.)
- integrate product breadcrumbs with existing wordpress breadcrumb plugins for consistent styling
- better inline and online documentation reg: marketing page (e.g. cross sales, survey fields, etc.)
- add javascript popup calendar to coupon settings
- assign coupon to individual/many products (e.g. coupon for 1 product in particular)
- better Add/Edit product / Variation add/edit/delete integration
- add description/additional description tinymce support for products/categories
- support for product prices to include “.00″, e.g. “220.00″ currently comes up as “220″.

Though as you said there are a lot of things to be desired about WP-ecommerce. What additional suggestions could you provide to improve WP e-commerce?

Great post. I am an experienced web developer who is creating my first web shop, I’m using wp-ecommerce with the Gold Cart optional upgrade. What a system!

The templating system still has alot to be desired, I’m used to Virtuemart within Joomla. It is alot easier at this time than wp-ecommerce but due to my technical skills getting around and making customisations is a breeze!

I’ve added a markup system and foreign currency API to my store so that I can drop ship items and manage my profits within the WordPress Administration, as soon as I’ve ironed it all out I’ll link and screenshot it for your readers.

As you’ll see if you jump around the product pages I’ve moved code around in order to better present critical store items (e.g. Buy now, product variations, shopping cart widget, etc.)

I’m still working on the site and am looking forward to making substantial sales as well as become an expert at using and customising Instinct’s great e-commerce plugin!

Lack Of Documentation
Its getting there with the upcoming launch of 3.7 and we’re about to introduce a Wiki. Actually even 3.6.10 has better inline code documentation – especially the variations files.

Invoice Printing Is Not Available
Yes it is. You have to click on the more details and then there is a print option. I was thinking this post might be out of date but maybe you just missed this feature

Inclusive of Tax Option Is Not Available
This is an option in 3.7 since New Zealand law is the same as Australian law.

Lacking Reports
We’re presently Beta Testing a new Graphs Module that shows much more info. I would LOVE to work with somebody on this – maybe you Tyrone?

Lack Of Template Options
When you upgrade to 3.7 (not released yet) you will notice that everything is powered by a template engine. We started with the shopping cart in the sidebar, then we did the products page and we’ve just about finished the checkout page. Meaning pretty much everything is customizable using Templates.

Its the real deal!
